چکیده

Research Officer, Forest Department, Research Station, Dwellingup W.A. 6213 Western Australia. Abstract: The jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata Sm.) forest of southwestern Australia extends over 21⁄2 million hectares. In addition to the climatic constraints on the formation of high, dense forest, the soils are impoverished and the vegetation is subject to frequent fire. As a consequence, the forest has developed unique adaptations. For 150 years, hardwood timber production was the principle objective. Now, there are true multiple use demands plus special disease problems and political constraints. This paper describes approaches to multiple use forest management in the presence of severe biological and political constraints.

Toward sustainable management: Southern Africa’s Afromontane, and Western Australia’s jarrah forests

We review the history of forest management in two southern hemisphere forest types: Western Australia’s jarrah Eucalyptus marginata forests and the Afromontane forests of southern Africa to determine approaches for achieving sustainable forest management. We argue that despite major differences in the ecology and biogeography of these two forest types, a shared pattern in the history of exploit...

Phytophthora Root and Collar Rot in Rehabilitated Bauxite Mines and the Adjacent Eucalyptus Marginata (jarrah) Forest of Western Australia

Western Australia is unique in its botanical diversity. There are over 7000 species of native vascular plants of which over 3000 are endemic (Keighery 1992). Phytophthora cinnamomi has a major impact on this diverse flora and directly effects over 2000 species from a diverse range of plant families (Wills 1993). Its indirect effects in terms of botanical impact through the loss of vertebrate an...

Annual Water Yield Estimation for Different Land Uses by GIS-Based InVEST Model (Case Study: Mish-khas Catchment, Ilam Province, Iran)

Fresh water supply and its security encounter a high level of fluctuating variability under global climate changes. To address these concerns in catchment water management, a good understanding of land use/cover impacts on the hydrological cycle affecting water supply is crucial. The objective of this study is to define a model to investigate the impact of existing land use/cover on water yield...

The MIMOSE Approach to Support Sustainable Forest Management Planning at Regional Scale in Mediterranean Contexts

In recent decades, Mediterranean landscapes have been affected by human-induced drivers, such as land use and climate change. Forest ecosystems and landscapes have been particularly affected in mountainous regions due to limited management and stewardship, especially in remote areas. Therefore, there is a need to set up new strategies to enhance ecosystem services in forested areas which, in tu...

Modeling the Supply of Sediment Retention Ecosystem Service (Case study: Eastern Part of Gorgan-Rud Watershed)

Ecosystem services are benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. Soil retention is one of the most important ecosystem services. The capacity of ecosystem to maintain soil can be estimated by quantifying this services. In this study, version 3.0.0 of the InVEST software was used to map this ecosystem service in the eastern part of Gorgan-Rud watershed. The InVEST model employs the Universal ...
